Mixed-Use with a Warehouse in the Way: Iterative Daylight Design Meets Historic Prservation

Case Study

Post HTX is an exercise in connecting past and present. Our task was to transform a two story 530,000-SF windowless mail sorting facility built in the 1960’s to an activated and engaging space. To help a building of suburban scale, but located downtown, become a more integral component of its’ urban context. In order to maintain historic status façade changes were limited. Many iterations of daylighting strategies were thus tested.

This case study demonstrates how design software can inform the decision-making process. Visualization tools informed by illumination metrics and iterated based on budgetary concerns allowed the team to effectually light public spaces on both floors of the warehouse while not compromising the historic appearance of the exterior from ground level.
